The National Institution Stobi was established by a Decision of the Government of the Republic of Macedonia on 26 August 2008 as a non-profit cultural institution. It was officially registered in the Central Register of the Republic of Macedonia on 17 December 2008 under the name National Institution for the Management of the Archaeological Site Stobi – Gradsko, with its headquarters at the archaeological site of Stobi. The abbreviated name of the institution is NI Stobi–Gradsko.

The rights to manage the archaeological site were transferred to the National Institution Stobi on 28 February 2009 (Decision of the Government of the Republic of Macedonia No. 19-893/1, Official Gazette of the Republic of Macedonia No. 33/09). The National Institution Stobi was established with the purpose of managing the archaeological site of Stobi and is responsible for archaeological excavations, conservation, maintenance, use, presentation, and promotion of the site.

The archaeological site of Stobi is the property of the Republic of Macedonia and is classified as a cultural monument of national importance, first category. It was declared a cultural monument in 1950 and reaffirmed in 1976, and it is recorded in the Central Register of Cultural Monuments under number 39. From 1970 to 1998, Stobi was managed by the National Museum of Veles, after which responsibility was transferred to the institution now known as the National Conservation Centre.

Stobi was once a thriving urban center at the crossroads of civilizations. By studying and sharing its ruins — from theaters and basilicas to streets and mosaics — we help people understand the lives, art, and culture of those who lived here centuries ago.
